With La Jolla's dramatic coastline and spectacular views, it's no surprise that La Jolla was one of the first San Diego neighborhoods to be settled, and has since become some of the most prized real estate in the nation.

Surrounded on three sides by the sea and backed by the steep slopes of Mt. Soledad, La Jolla has a mediterranean feel and enjoys a unique microclimate which rarely drops below 50 degrees or exceeds 90 degrees.

The bustling business district offers one-of-a-kind boutiques, art galleries and restaurants, and the surrounding residential community is a charming mix of turn-of-the-century Spanish architecture, eccentric modern designs and everything in-between.

La Jolla's big draw, for locals and tourists alike, is the sea. In the summer and autumn months, the surf is relatively gentle, the water warms into the 70s, and the beaches at La Jolla Shores, The Cove and Windansea are busy with swimmers, scuba divers and surfers. In the Winter and Spring, the coast takes on an ominous mood with billowing fogs and powerful
winter surf crashing on the rocks.

  • La Jolla Annual Events & Festivals - For a complete list of La Jolla events, visit La Jolla's www.lajollabythesea.com events calendar under "Things to Do" or view the San Diego Official Major Events Calendar online at www.sandiego.org. The information at this site is a cooperative effort provided by Promote La Jolla and the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau.
  • La Jolla Playhouse  - The La Jolla Playhouse was founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer. The La Jolla Playhouse has earned its place in the international theatre, having presented countless productions of classics and new plays and musicals, including 23 world premieres, 24 West Coast premieres and four American premieres. The La Jolla Playhouse is a not-for-profit, professional theatre-in-residence with three performance venues -- Mandell Weiss Theatre, the Mandell Weiss Forum and the new Potiker Theatre -- on the campus of the University of California, San Diego.
  • La Jolla Cove  - La Jolla Cove (1100 Coast Boulevard) is a very small beach, tucked between adjacent La Jolla sandstone cliffs. Due to its extraordinary beauty, La Jolla Cove is one of the most photographed beaches in Southern California. La Jolla Cove is within a short walk of the commercial area of the community of La Jolla, but retains a character all its own.
  • La Jolla Shores  - La Jolla Shores (8200 Camino del Oro) is a sandy beach approximately one mile long, adjacent to one of La Jolla's beautiful residential area. In summer, waves at La Jolla Shores beach are usually the most gentle of all San Diego beaches, although rip currents may still be strong at times. For this reason, many novice scuba classes are held at La Jolla Shores. Kellogg Park, a grassy area, is located behind the main La Jolla Shores lifeguard station and is ideal for picnicking. A wide cement boardwalk parallels a portion of the La Jolla Shores beach between the park and the sand.
  • La Jolla Kellogg Park - Kellogg Park is the large grassy park located at La Jolla Shores beach and provides ample space for children to run and play. There is an excellent La Jolla playground near the boardwalk about 75 yards south of the Lifeguard Station. Adding to the pro-family atmosphere of La Jolla Shores and Kellogg Park is a complete ban on alcoholic beverages. Permits for Kellogg Park are issued between Labor Day to Memorial Day; no permits are issued for the summer months or holidays. La Jolla Shores has the only beach front boat launch within the City limits and is a popular area for Surf Camps, divers and kayakers.
  • La Jolla Reefs - If the streets and storefronts in La Jolla seem older than elsewhere along the coast, it's because they are. With its fantastic natural scenery, unique in all San Diego, La Jolla was a natural choice for the earliest settlers and Indians before them. Over the years, the rising demand for room with a view has set the market and shaped La Jolla into the affluent community reflected in the upscale restaurants, fine art galleries and Ferrari dealerships about town.
  • La Jolla Athenaeum - The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, located in the heart of La Jolla, California, is one of only 17 nonprofit, membership libraries in the United States. This rare cultural institution, an important one in La Jolla and the greater San Diego area, offers a depth and accessibility of resources and programs found nowhere else in the region. The library, devoted exclusively to music and art, has an outstanding and ever-expanding collection of books, periodicals, reference material, compact discs, videocassettes, CD- ROMs, DVDs, LPs, sheet music, music scores and librettos, as well as one of the most significant collections of artists' books in Southern California. La Jolla's Athenaeum is open to the public five days a week; members can check out materials for a modest annual fee.
